Did you know...
Thylacines didn't have stripes going all the way down their tails. This is a common error due to captive thylacine photographs. Many of these thylacines were so emaciated that their caudal (tail) vertebrae showed through their skin; This caused the stripe effect that we see.
When you study period paintings and unaltered taxidermy specimens you'll also see that there are no stripes. Some sun damaged taxidermy specimens were incorrectly altered to include tail stripes post-extinction.
National Thylacine Day
The last known thylacine, nick-named Benjamin, died this day (7th September 1936), at Beaumaris Zoo (Hobart, Tasmania).
